Canon Pixma E02 Error

The E02 error on Canon Pixma printers indicates an ink system failure. This can be caused by clogged print heads, low or empty ink cartridges, or a temporary firmware glitch. Here's how to diagnose and fix it.

What Causes the E02 Error?

  • Clogged print head nozzles: Dried ink blocking the print head after periods of non-use
  • Empty or faulty ink cartridges: One or more cartridges may be depleted or not seated properly
  • Ink system air bubbles: Air trapped in the ink delivery system
  • Firmware glitch: A temporary software error that can be resolved with a reset

Fix 1: Run the Print Head Cleaning Cycle

This is the most common fix. The built-in cleaning cycle forces fresh ink through the print head nozzles, clearing any clogs.

Step 1: Make sure the printer is powered on and has paper loaded in the tray.
Step 2: On the printer's control panel, press and hold the Stop/Reset button for 5–10 seconds until the alarm lamp flashes 2 times.
Step 3: The printer will begin a print head cleaning cycle. This takes 1–2 minutes. Do not turn off the printer during this process.
Step 4: Once complete, print a nozzle check pattern: Go to Setup → Tools → Nozzle Check.

If the nozzle check shows broken or missing lines, run the cleaning cycle up to 3 times. If the print quality doesn't improve after 3 cycles, move to the next fix.

Fix 2: Reseat the Ink Cartridges

Incorrectly seated cartridges are a frequent cause of the E02 error.

  1. Open the printer's front cover and wait for the cartridge holder to move to the center.
  2. Remove all ink cartridges by pressing down on the release tab.
  3. Inspect each cartridge for damage, leaking, or dried ink on the copper contacts.
  4. Clean the copper contacts gently with a dry, lint-free cloth.
  5. Reinsert each cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.
  6. Close the front cover and try printing again.
Note: If you recently replaced a cartridge, make sure it's a genuine Canon cartridge or a high-quality compatible one. Some third-party cartridges can trigger the E02 error.

Fix 3: Perform a Printer Reset

A full power reset clears the printer's memory and can resolve firmware glitches.

  1. Turn off the printer using the power button.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer AND from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait at least 5 minutes (this allows the internal capacitors to fully discharge).
  4. Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on.
  5. Try printing a test page.

Fix 4: Replace the Ink Cartridges

If the error persists after all the above steps, one or more cartridges may be genuinely depleted or defective. Check your ink levels:

  1. On your computer, open Canon IJ Printer Utility.
  2. Click Ink Level Information to see which cartridges need replacement.
  3. Replace any empty or near-empty cartridges with genuine Canon replacements.

When to Contact Canon Support

If none of the above fixes resolve the E02 error, the issue may be a hardware failure in the ink delivery system. At this point, contacting Canon's official support is recommended. However, in most cases, the print head cleaning cycle or cartridge reseating solves the problem.
