Epson EcoTank Print Head Cleaning

If your Epson EcoTank ET-2800 is producing streaky, faded, or banded prints, the print head nozzles are likely clogged. This guide covers both the software cleaning method and a manual deep cleaning approach.

When to Clean the Print Head

  • Prints have horizontal white lines or streaks
  • Colors look faded or washed out
  • One or more colors are missing entirely
  • The printer hasn't been used for several weeks

Method 1: Head Cleaning via Printer Software

The Epson ET-2800 has a built-in print head cleaning utility that you can run from your computer. This is the easiest and safest first step.

Step 1: Make sure the printer is powered on and connected to your computer.
Step 2: Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers on Windows, or System Preferences → Printers & Scanners on Mac.
Step 3: Right-click (or Control-click) the Epson ET-2800 and select Printing Preferences.
Step 4: Click the Maintenance tab, then select Print Head Cleaning.
Step 5: Click Start and wait for the cleaning cycle to finish (about 1–2 minutes). Do not turn off the printer.
Step 6: After cleaning, print a nozzle check pattern to see if the clog is cleared.
Important: Run the cleaning cycle a maximum of 3–4 times. If the issue persists after 4 cycles, proceed to the manual cleaning method. Excessive cleaning wastes a significant amount of ink.

Method 2: Manual Print Head Cleaning (Deep Clean)

If the software cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, a manual cleaning of the print head may be necessary. This method requires accessing the print head assembly.

What You'll Need

  • Distilled water (not tap water — minerals can damage the print head)
  • A small shallow dish
  • Lint-free cloths or coffee filters
  • Rubber gloves (optional but recommended)
  • Paper towels
Step 1: Power off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
Step 2: Open the printer cover and wait for the print head carriage to move to the center position. If it doesn't move, gently slide it manually.
Step 3: Remove the ink cartridges and set them aside on a paper towel with the nozzle side up.
Step 4: Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water. Gently wipe the bottom of the print head (the area where ink comes out). Do not touch the copper contacts.
Step 5: For stubborn clogs, place the print head (still attached to the carriage) on a paper towel soaked in warm distilled water. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes to dissolve dried ink.
Step 6: Wipe any excess moisture, reinsert the cartridges, close the cover, and power on the printer.
Step 7: Run one software cleaning cycle and print a nozzle check.

Prevention Tips

  • Print regularly: Use your printer at least once a week to keep ink flowing through the nozzles.
  • Don't leave it idle: If you won't use the printer for 2+ weeks, print a test page before storing it.
  • Use genuine Epson ink: Third-party inks may have different chemical compositions that clog nozzles faster.
  • Keep it in a stable environment: Extreme heat or cold can affect ink consistency.

When to Consider Professional Help

If manual cleaning doesn't restore print quality, the print head may be permanently damaged. In that case, you may need a replacement print head or professional servicing. For the Epson ET-2800, replacement print heads are available through Epson's parts service.
